CHAPTER 35

Flashing blue lights blazed in the sky, and there was pandemonium outside the entrance of Northern General Hospital, where Kevin Rawlinson was admitted after his fall from the roof.

Two police riot vans were parked next to the two squad cars, and visitors were being directed to another entrance via the main A&E.

A bunch of thuggish skinheads stood smoking outside the entrance to the wards, watched by a group of burly uniforms who had been drafted in for the possible showdown. The skinheads wore leather jackets, and spat on the floor, and hurled curses at the uniforms.

Inspector Jonty Adams came up to Roy and Sarah as they approached the groups.

“It’s worse inside. They’ve blocked us from getting inside the ward. It all kicked off when we tried to move Kevin to the nick. He was stable, and the doctor said he could be moved as long as he had regular checks with the FMP tonight.” The Forensic Medical Physician was a local GP called Shauna Edwards, and Roy had met her before.

“How did they know he was here?” Roy growled. “We confiscated Kevin’s phone as soon as he was arrested, correct?”

“Beats me,” Jonty flapped his arms. “He had nothing else on him. There’s no leak from my team I can assure you.”

That had been the other only other option Roy was suspicious about. After what happened last time, they couldn’t be too careful. Jonty read the look on Roy’s face.

“I only told my skipper, and I sat in the front. Only two of us knew where we were going.”

“Clearly someone else did. Maybe someone at the hospital leaked it. Kevin might know people who work here.” He shook his head. “Anyway, let’s go upstairs.”

“Before we knew it, there was like a dozen of them,” Jonty said. “They blocked the ward doors. Security was called, but hospital security’s pretty useless.”

“Was there a fight?” Sarah asked. In response, Jonty took off his hat, and they saw the ugly welt on the side of his head.

“Windows got smashed, and instruments were broken. I radioed for help. Then this lot appeared,” Jonty indicated the skinheads at the gate. “They’re like reinforcement for the thugs upstairs. Kevin’s a big bastard in the Sheffield underworld. His dad’s Shaun Rawlinson.”

Sarah made a clucking sound in her mouth. “I should have twigged that. No wonder his name’s familiar. They’re the Loxley Boys, aren’t they?”

“That’s the name of their gang, aye,” Jonty said. “This lot aren’t saying who they are, but we got them on camera, anyway. Anyway. We can’t get Kevin out without a riot, guv. What do you want to do?”

Jonty and Sarah looked at Roy. He sighed, then kicked his foot on the tarmac. “Let me speak to him.”

As they stepped out onto the third floor, Roy saw Jonty wasn’t wrong about the possibility of a riot. Barrel-chested, thick-armed thugs lined the lobby outside the lifts and stood outside the ward door. The uniformed officers standing guard looked pensive, watching them closely. A group of hospital security officers stood next to a uniform sergeant, speaking in a low voice.
